Endoscopy Services at USMC
Persistent digestive issues like heartburn, abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits require a clear and accurate diagnosis. At USMC’s specialised Endoscopy Suite in Blantyre (located at Old Kamponda Hospital), we provide the answers you need. Using advanced high-definition video scopes, our specialists can directly visualise the digestive tract to find the cause of your symptoms. Importantly, early detection through endoscopy can prevent over 80% of colorectal cancers.
Our Endoscopy Expertise
We provide both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in a safe, comfortable, and private environment.
1. Gastroscopy (Upper GI Endoscopy)
What It Is: A thin, flexible scope is gently passed through the mouth to examine your oesophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum).
Commonly Used To Investigate: Persistent heartburn (acid reflux), difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, suspected ulcers, H. Pylori infection, and unexplained weight loss.
Therapeutic Capabilities: During the procedure, we can take small tissue samples (biopsies) for analysis and perform treatments like stopping bleeding from ulcers.
2. Colonoscopy
What It Is: Considered the gold standard for examining the entire large intestine (colon) and the end of the small intestine.
Commonly Used To Investigate: The cause of chronic diarrhoea or constipation, blood in the stool, and abdominal pain.
The Gold Standard for Cancer Prevention: A colonoscopy is crucial for colorectal cancer screening. It allows us to find and remove polyps (small, pre-cancerous growths) during the same procedure, effectively preventing cancer before it even has a chance to start.
3. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
What It Is: A similar but less extensive procedure that examines the lower part of the colon (the sigmoid colon). It is a useful screening tool for certain conditions and can be done with minimal preparation.
